Get Your Couch Potato Kid Outside for Exercise

It doesn’t seem possible that kids can become a couch potato so quickly, without us parents noticing. But it can and does happen. A couple weeks go by and the weather is bad and you just got busy with work, family life, etc. Then, you notice and you think ‘How long has he been watching television today?’ or play video games. Or you can’t remember the last time you saw him get up from the couch except to get a snack. Your child has become a couch potato and it is time to make your best effort to put a stop to it.

Why should you do your best to get your kids off the couch? Because kids who lead sedentary lifestyles are prone to have health and other problems including being over-weight, not doing well in school, being moody, having problems in their peer group and more. You can help your child get all of the benefits of getting off the couch and playing outside with friends with these tips:

Limit the amount of time your child is allowed to be in front of a screen. This includes watching television, playing video games or being on the computer for fun – it does not include homework time, but check their homework when they are done. When you set the expectations for your children, and follow through with whatever consequence you deem fit for not adhering to the rule they will listen.

Is your child good at sports? If so, find every opportunity to allow them to sign up for the game. Make friends with the other players parents and see if you can car pool to save time and money. If your child is not good at team sports, think off playing field activities. Bike riding, roller blades and skates, skateboards are all fun activities kids enjoy doing and it will get them out of the house.
